History

Since Minecraft was released, we modders have been asking ourselves, "how do we fix this terrible game?"

We got a glimmer of hope in April 1, 2015, when Mojang released a version of the game containing the minigame, "MineScreeper". This game had innovative non-social deduction gameplay and a delightful retro aesthetic. Sadly, this version of the game was short-lived and Mojang decided to take a different direction with their game.

Today I'm overjoyed to announce that I've finally cracked the case: I have removed Minecraft from Minecraft. Instead, the game boots to a 100% Java reimagining of a different Microsoft classic: Minesweeper.

Minesweeper: The Game: The Mod

Minesweeper has stripped-down, meditative gameplay, similar to sudoku or picross. The game follows simple, easy-to-learn rules and gives you plenty of information for strategic deductions.

...With a Twist

In an immersive new take on the genre, take on the role of a little person walking on the game board. Really feel the tension in the game as you put your character's life on the line, as a single bomb will prove deadly!

Clear tiles to gain points, but also to open up new areas to explore.

Modded

Minesweeper is fully fabric-loader-moddable, targetable by mixins, and has systems intentionally designed with modding in mind. Add new kinds of worlds, features, bombs, tiles, and portals. Add temporary areas and pocket dimensions. Change how bombs are distributed. The rules are whatever you want them to be!

Release Date

This mod released on April 1, 2024 on Modrinth. You can still play Minesweeper on Minecraft 1.20.4. This was followed by a more modest EarlyTags on April 1, 2025, but please look forward to news in the future about a bigger project in 2026!
